Orange, botanically known as CITRUS SINENSIS and Osanmimu, Orombo didun in some Nigerian Languages is used for the treatment of many ailments that defy medical applications. This sweet orange that is sold by many market men and women even children in market places and along some streets has gained popularity in the treatment of diseases.
Orange, as it is popularly known is a natural remedy for:- toothache, dysentery, fever, headache and it is an antiscorbutic, antimicrobial and anthelmintics. This antimicrobial agent can be found in many compounds, grow freely without the aid of fertilizer. Multinational companies all over the world cultivate orange farms which they use in the manufacturing of orange juice. Those that import its concentrates for the production of orange juice have made developed nations richer with foreign currencies.
The fruits, Twigs, stems and bark of this plant are all useful as medicine for the treatment of deadly diseases.
Orange fruit contains lot of nutrients which include: Vitamin A,B1, B2, C, Potassium, Phosphorus, Calcium, Fibres, Protein and Cancer fighting agents.
Orange is anti-carcinogenic in nature. As an antioxidant and antitoxin natural food, this fruit has been accepted all over the world as cells purifying drink. It neutralizes carcinogenic agents. A fruit of orange and half seize of a medium tomatoes every day prevent any form of cancer.
The Vitamin ‘C’ in orange makes it more valuable in the treatment and prevention of deadly diseases. The vitamin ‘C’ with its bioflavonoid promotes the antibiotic and antiviral. Vitamin B2 known as riboflavin is stored in the muscles for physical activities and it is used in the protection of cataracts and fatigue. Deficiency in Vitamin B2 results in dry eye and cracks in the corner of the lips.
Vitamin ‘A’ in Orange comes in form of Beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is found in red and yellow pigments in natural plants and fruits that use photosynthesis for energy. Among all the carotenes, beta-carotene is the most active as vitamin ‘A’ precursor. The Carotene acts as powerful antioxidant and can be consumed without symptom of toxicity. Carotenes are stored in fat cells, the skin, liver and other organs of the body. Beta-Carotene forms vitamin ‘A’ while in the body system.
